I make all kinds of stuff, but maybe you didn’t know I make some small VFX videos as a fun hobby. I really enjoy the visual aspect of it and trying to kind of tell a story with the effects. I also like to make sure the audio stacks up to the visuals, and often that’s without music.
“Summoning in the Office” let me practice some hand-drawn 2D animation with the electric effects and 3D motion-tracking and rendering with the otherworldly hole in the floor. This took a while to render, so maybe I should upgrade my computer at some point.
“Lego Brick Telepathy” took some fun planning to pull off. In particular, it involved children. This one uses a simple reverse trick to pull the blocks back together, but you might not realize there’s hidden wire work and greenscreen involved too. Even simple effects sometimes take more steps than you might think, but they’re often very effective. I also had to effect the voice dubbing to make it sound like the kids were standing where they might have been if this was all recorded in-lens. It was fun putting this one together!
I really like mixing practical elements in. I used some simple spinning dart shooter elements on a greenscreen to place in then added fake shadows cast onto my body. Those little details help sell the effect even if you might not be directly paying attention to them. There are little errors with the greenscreen matte work, but this was a fun evening project.
The “Toy Blaster” short took the most work of all of these! It uses 3D-tracked, hand-drawn burn marks all over the place in addition to light beam effects from the toy blaster. It was fun masking things to make it spin around the body as well as crossing between the posts on our back deck. The smoke effects complete the effect along with some laser audio I made and some overall screen effects. This took a lot of work for just a short sequence, so hats off to the people making big vfx scenes!
